We get calls like this regularly in San Antonio. The homeowner woke up, hit the button, and nothing happened. Or the opener ran but the door barely moved. First instinct: something’s wrong with the opener.
That instinct is wrong most of the time.
A working garage door should be able to open by hand without much effort. That’s not a design feature, it’s how the system is supposed to function. The springs carry the weight. The opener handles the convenience and the security. When the door won’t move, the question to ask first is whether the springs are doing their job, not whether the opener needs adjusting.
How To Tell If It’s the Springs
Pull the red emergency release cord that hangs from the opener rail. This disconnects the door from the opener so you can test it manually.
Try to lift the door by hand from the bottom. A door with working springs should rise smoothly and feel relatively light. It should also stay up on its own when you let go at waist height.
If the door feels very heavy, takes significant effort to raise, or drops back down when you release it, the spring is the problem. Leave the door in the closed position and call a technician. Do not reconnect the opener and continue trying to run it.
The Mistake That Turns One Repair Into Two
We arrived at a home in Stone Oak after a homeowner had spent the better part of a morning trying to get his door open. He’d reset the opener, checked the remote batteries, gone through the programming steps, and run the opener repeatedly. The door kept lurching upward a few inches and stopping.
By the time we got there, the torsion spring had snapped. That was the original problem. But after all those cycles with the opener running against a dead spring, the motor had burned out as well.
A garage door without spring support puts the full weight of the door on the opener. On a standard two-car door, that can be anywhere from 150 to 200 pounds or more. The motor was never designed to handle that load on its own. Run it enough times under those conditions and it won’t survive.
One spring repair became a spring replacement and an opener replacement. The cost difference was significant.
Other Reasons a Garage Door Won’t Open
Power supply. If the opener shows no lights and doesn’t respond at all, check the outlet and the circuit breaker before assuming the motor has failed.
Sensors. If the opener hums and the door moves slightly but then reverses, look at the two small sensors near the floor on either side of the opening. A blinking light means the beam is interrupted. Wipe the lenses and make sure nothing is blocking the path.
Locks. Manual locks on the door itself, if engaged, will prevent the door from moving regardless of what the opener does. Check the handle and slide lock before troubleshooting anything else.
Cables. If a cable has come off the drum or is visibly frayed, the door will feel uneven or won’t open fully. This is a technician repair.
When To Call a Professional
Test the door manually first. If it moves easily by hand and stays up, the issue is likely with the opener or remote, and there are steps you can try yourself.
If the door is heavy, won’t stay up, or the cable looks wrong, stop and call. Spring tension is significant, and working on it without the right tools and training creates a real safety risk.
